Ohio Conference

It is with great sadness that I share with you the passing of our beloved grades 3 and 4 teacher and alumna Mrs. Kimberly Geach Orr (’06) on November 19, due to flu complications. Orr taught at Spring Valley Academy (SVA) for the past seven-and-a-half years, and the school has already felt the void left by her unexpected departure.

The memory of her radiant smile, easy laugh and dedicated teaching will live on for a long time in all of us. Orr leaves behind her husband, Cameron, and 2-year-old daughter, Scarlett. She will be sadly missed by her family, students and friends, but we rejoice because we have that “Blessed Hope” to meet her again one day!

This week the Ohio Conference Executive Committee voted Roy Simpson to be the conference's new treasurer. He comes highly recommended by conference finance and personnel committees, as well as by treasury colleagues.

Simpson has been with the Ohio Conference since 2015, serving as assistant treasurer before becoming interim treasurer this fall.

Ron Halvorsen Jr, presidente de la Conferencia de Ohio, aceptó una invitación de la Conferencia de Washington para regresar al ministerio pastoral. Halvorsen y su esposa Beth "Buffy" Verico Halvorsen, han servido en la Conferencia de Ohio desde febrero del 2014. Throughout the yearlong journey with Disciple Ohio—a complete member involvement initiative—Ohio Conference church members have been encouraged to think big and outside the box. The Findlay (Ohio) church took this to heart and recently hosted a cooking school by noted professional chef Mark Anthony. They began the planning stages during the summer months, to put invitations into the hands of fairgoers at the Hancock County Fair.

For several years, Ohio Conference's Akron First church has actively served refugees from Burma, Thailand, Rwanda, the Congo, Uganda and Kenya who have settled in the community.
