How to Help Your Local Adventist School This Year

It is no secret that teachers are under a lot of pressure right now, balancing planning for a year of school online and/or in the classroom—a status easily subject to change—with their own health concerns and family needs.

“Most of our schools are facing a workload they aren’t used to, so to get COVID-19 ready, to get the school ready, is more work than we have the manpower to do,” says Roderick Kerbs II, principal of Chesapeake Conference’s Mt. Aetna Adventist School in Hagerstown, Md.

With masks on and desks set six feet (or more) apart, teachers at schools in the Columbia Union Conference are facing a school year that looks much different than years past.

On the morning of August 4, Tropical Storm Isaias spawned an EF-1 tornado with winds exceeding 100 mph, touching down in the Dover, Del. area, according to the National Weather Service.

The tropical storm and tornado impacted the Dover First Christian School (Del.), causing damage to the property. High winds knocked down trees, fencing, as well as an exterior brick wall, exposing underlying structures. However, in the wake of the storm, the Dover church and school community rallied together.

Discussing what is happening with America’s schools has been the hot topic across the nation all summer. People have been waiting for the Coronavirus Task Force, local governors, and regional Boards of Education to make decisions and give guidance regarding the safe reopening of our nation’s schools. On an almost weekly and sometimes daily basis, guidance has changed based on new statistics and resurgence of the coronavirus in different regions. All the while, educators have been chasing a moving target.

Kettering College held their summer commencement ceremony as a drive-thru ceremony to celebrate its 2020 graduates on Friday, July 10. Over 200 graduates from eight programs participated in the ceremony.

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the traditional commencement ceremony had to be canceled. The drive-thru graduation ceremony provided the opportunity to recognize and celebrate the graduates while adhering to CDC social distancing guidelines.
