Adventist HealthCare

Adventist HealthCare traces its roots to the turn of the 20th century when Ellen White, co-founder of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, contributed proceeds from the sale of her book, “The Ministry of Healing,” to help build the Washington Sanitarium. The Washington Sanitarium opened in February 1904 and was temporarily headquartered in Washington, D.C., until moving to Takoma Park, Md., in June 1907.

In its early years, the Sanitarium (pictured above, left) ministered to the physical, mental and spiritual health of its visitors through rest, exercise and a wholesome diet. After World War I, the “San” began providing surgical, obstetric and emergency care. In 1971, the hospital (pictured above, right, then called Adventist HealthCare Washington Adventist Hospital) performed the first open heart surgery in Montgomery County, Md. The hospital transitioned in 2019 to become the new state-of-the-art Adventist HealthCare White Oak Medical Center (pictured below) to further expand healthcare services to the region.

In fact, this total well-being approach has been so successful in helping our community achieve the best health outcomes that Adventist HealthCare has grown to become a comprehensive health system including two additional acute care hospitals – Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center that was built in 1979 and Adventist HealthCare Fort Washington Medical Center that was acquired in 2019 – and two rehabilitation hospitals, along with multiple outpatient rehab centers.

Adventist HealthCare also offers two community cancer centers, a freestanding emergency department, and a full range of Imaging and Home Care services. Adventist HealthCare is seen as leaders in the ministry of healing, particularly in the areas of heart, orthopedics, maternity and mental health.

Adventist HealthCare is the largest provider of healthcare in Montgomery County across more than 50 facilities and touches the lives of approximately 650,000 people annually throughout the Washington, D.C., region. It is also one of the largest employers in the state of Maryland, with more than 6,200 employees and promotes collaboration through the One Health Quality Alliance, our clinically integrated network of over 1,700 healthcare providers who work together to improve both the quality of care and patient outcomes throughout the region.

Adventist HealthCare also manages Howard University Hospital and partners with Washington Adventist University to train nursing students.
